Jennifer Egan’s “A Visit From the Goon Squad” Won the Pulitzer Prize.

I like to think she won because of the chapter in the book inspired by “Closing Time.” (That’s the chapter written entirely in Powerpoint form.) But there might be other reasons. Mainly I’m enjoying a “sidestream” prize effect, but the whole thing tickles me.

Haha. Just read this book last night on the plane back to NY from LA and the ASCAP Expo. I couldn’t put it down so finished it this morning. Then, I cried and now am reviewing, digesting all that was last week at the Expo and wondering what to do next, and to whom I should reach out to. Since the first pane, I had in mind to start with you and went to check out your site and lo and behold…weird…I see this blogpost about the book I just finished an hour ago.

It was on the shelf of my friend whose couch I stayed on in Silver Lake whle attending the Expo–where a major highlight was hearing you. I had heard Jennifer read a chapter–not the “Powerpoint” chapter but rather the one where she goes to visit Bosco in his flat–at Joe’s Pub Happy Ending series in NYC a few months ago and was sort of interested in a book set in the music industry but didn’t like the title of the book or something just didn’t grab me enough. Plus, I was finishing my own book–a memoir, so was focused on gobbling up as many memoirs as possible last year. But it caught my eye on her shelf and my very literary hostess said it really was worth a read–” a good plane read”–and it was…genius.

Genius like…”Someone Like You.” I heard this a few months ago. As a songwriter, I love so much music that I hear but it is rare that I say, “I wish I wrote that” but such is the case for “Someone Like You.” I hadn’t had a chance to preview who was speaking at the Expo so it was a special surprise and honor to hear you, especially after spending months with 21 on replay.

Genius like the double entendre you revealed re: Closing Time.

Anyway, it was really great to hear you and I will email you via your contact link in hopes of a dialogue on songwriting as what I did get out of the Expo is a desire to start collaborating, trying to get feedback from those I admire such as yourself, and ending a stretch working in a vacuum.

Thanks and cheers to Goon Squad and a “sidestream” effect.
I will certainly be singing its praises and yours.
